4 Simple Steps To Take Care Of Your 36 Inch Gas Range

Gas RangeIf you have invested in a Gas Range, it is even more important to take its care for better maintenance and longevity. Here I would like to share 4 simple steps using which you can take care of your 36 inch Gas Range or for that matter any sized Gas Range. Here are the steps:

  1. Maintaining Surface Burners – Remove the burners from cooktop. Clean the parts around the burners area. Also clean the burners removing all the burnt food. Apart from this remove any spill overs from the cooktop. Please read this post for ways to clean both burners and cooktop.
  2. Maintaining the Ovens – Every gas range comes up with a manual to effectively clean the ovens. You should follow that manual, otherwise as per the built of your ovens you can follow following steps:
    • Self-Cleaning Ovens – These ovens have pyrolytic coating which helps in reducing dirt to ash at high temperatures. Use a soft moist cloth to wipe out spillovers and grease. As per your range manual, set the cleaning cycle and after cleaning and cooling wipe out any leftover residue with moist cloth.
    • Continuous-cleaning Ovens – These ovens have catalytic coating which helps in cleaning while the oven cooks. This technology is not much prevalent these days. Anyway if your range has this technology then to clean these ovens, you may occasionally use water and nylon pad to wipe out the inner surface and after drying run the ovens for 2 hours at 475°F. Apart from that protect the oven bottom from heavy spills with a piece of foil.
    • Standard Porcelain Enamel Ovens – These ovens have to be cleaned manually each time. You may use warm water and a steel wool pad to clean the interiors of spillovers. It is best to clean these ovens when they are not entirely cool yet little hot.
  3. Maintaining the Broilers – As soon as you are done with broiling, remove broiler pan and grid. Then sprinkle broiler pan and grid with liquid detergent and cover them with a soft moist cloth. This will help in loosening the residue and then you can wipe it off. Also remember never to use aluminum foil on broiler grid as it creates hindrance in cleaning and increases smoking.
  4. Maintaining the Range Facade (Exterior) – There are mainly two types of range facades: Stainless Steel and Chrome & Porcelain and Baked.
    • Stainless Steel and Chrome – Wash the surface with mildly warm water and remove spots with some soft cleaner and then polish with some soft cloth.
    • Porcelain and Baked – Avoid wet cloth on hot porcelain surface as this may cause cracks on the surface. Also avoid cleaners with wax base. Rather whenever there are any spills, immediately use a soft dry cloth or paper towels to wipe them off and when the range cools off, use some soft cleaner with warm water and then polish with a soft dry cloth.

I am sure, if you follow above routine at regular intervals, your range will remain neat and clean as well as in good working condition. All the best!

5 Benefits Of Dual Fuel Gas Range You Should Not Miss Out

Dual fuel gas ranges by definition are those ranges which heat the cooktop using gas and ovens using electricity. There are lots of debates regarding whether one should go for dual fuel gas range or not. Here I would like to discuss 5 benefits of dual fuel gas range which will help you in decision making:

  1. Stable Oven Temperature – Dual fuel ranges have no fluctuations in the temperature of ovens. This is quite handy especially if you are fond of baking. Also its stable temperature allows an all round even cooking.
  2. Self Cleaning Facility Since dual fuel ranges are equipped with electric ovens, that is why all of them come up with self cleaning feature.
  3. Dual Fuel Advantage  Dual fuel option of gas for cooktop and electricity for ovens is an added and empowering advantage for lots of range owners where there is facility of powerful cooktop cooking and evenly oven baking and simmering. Thus it offers the best of both gas and electric cooking. Check out the review of top 36 Inch Dual Fuel Ranges here.

8 Important Aspects To Check Before Purchasing Any Gas Range!

Purchasing a Gas Range or for that matter any other range for your Kitchen is not a quick or impulsive decision. Since Gas Ranges do not come cheap and there are various other aspects to be considered, the decision has to be taken after evaluating all the options. I have compiled a list of 8 aspects which I feel are very important while making such a decision and I am sure this will help you too! So here is the list:

  1. Price – Either you are price conscious or you are quality conscious. But there is a fine balance between these two. I believe in purchasing affordable yet high quality products. In short, go for value for money!
  2. Number of Ovens and Racks – If you are multitasker and like flexibility to cook different dishes at the same time then it is important for you to choose the range with lots of racks and/or rack positions. Otherwise you may go for a range with single oven and not many racks or rack positions.
  3. Burner Power – These days most of the ranges come up with 5 burners. One of these burners is a simmer burner with less than 5,000 BTU power in almost all the ranges. Rest of the four burners are of higher power. So, as per your cooking style and requirement choose the range carefully. Also as a side note, higher power does not always mean better performance or vice-versa. Please click here for details regarding different types of burners.
  4. Weight and Dimensions – You don’t want your gas range to look awkward in your kitchen. So depending upon the space available and your aesthetic taste, choose the range which is a right fit for your kitchen.

  5. Oven Capacity – Oven Capacity is one of the most important aspects while choosing a gas range. Generally 4 cu. ft. capacity is right for a small family of 4 people. While if you have more than 4 members in your family, then go for the range with more than 5 cu. ft. of capacity.
  6. Fuel Type – You want only gas range or only electric range or a dual fuel gas range, it totally depends upon you. I personally recommend dual fuel gas range as it includes benefits of both gas only and electric only ranges. For details, you can read following article written by me: 8 Advantages of Gas ranges (Dual Fuel) over Electric ranges
  7. Self-Cleaning – I am sure you will agree with me that it is highly uncomfortable to scrub the spillovers and other leftover food from the cavity. You don’t want to do this boring task, right? That’s where the self-clean feature makes life easy for you! So, if you are like me, do choose the range which has self-cleaning feature inbuilt! :)
  8. Customer Satisfaction  Actual customer reviews should also be one of the most important aspects while choosing a gas range. Customer Reviews on Amazon.com are one of the most genuine and credible for any product out there. While it is important to see whether the product is highly rated, it is also important to see the total number of reviews. Say if product ‘A’ has a 5 star rating but just 2 reviews, and on the other hand product ‘B’ has 4 star rating with 20 reviews, then I would go with product ‘B’.

So all the best! And have a great time shopping for a new range for your Kitchen! :)

Top 30 Inch Gas Ranges Review

GE CGS990SETSS 30" Stainless Steel Gas Sealed Burner Range

The first product on my list is by ‘GE’, which is a world class company from USA, trusted for quality of the products it manufactures. That said, what I like about this product is its overall value for money. Are you looking for the gas range which has capacity to prepare large meals or quick family meals in quick time and is affordable too?  Then, this is the right product for you. Out of both the products chosen by me for comparison, this product has the largest capacity. Its double ovens have 6.7 cu. ft. of capacity. The upper oven is convection model which pre-heats quickly and cooks juicy Turkey and roasts Chicken or Lamb just perfectly. The lower oven is a bake model which allows cooking at two different temperatures, just right size for baking large pizzas or cakes. Both ovens feature convection, bake and roast features.

Also, you will agree, how uncomfortable it can be to scrub the spillovers and other leftover food from the cavity. You don’t want to do this boring task, right? That’s where the self-clean feature of GE makes life easy for you! Moreover, the sleek design helps keep your cooktop clean by collecting all the mess under the grates without interfering with the flame quality!

Apart from that, here are some other Pros:

  • Its powerful tri-ring burner delivers 20,000 BTUs for quick boiling or even frying or searing.
  • Its center oval burner is ideal for griddle or odd-sized cookware.
  • The cooktop reaches gentle temperatures of 150ºF for melting tender foods and for simmering.
  • Its non-stick griddle is ideal for pancakes and bacons.
  • It is ADA compliant. i.e. it is designed to be accessible and easy to open.

Although this product has many Pros, what I found not much amazing is its digital timer. You have to enter the time in Hrs:Min format. For instance, If you key in 70 minutes, it will show an error message. Since there are two ovens, I would have liked to see dual timer function.

LG LRG3095

LG LRG3095ST 30" Stainless Steel Gas Sealed Burner Range - Convection

The second product on my list is by ‘LG’. LG is a reputed multinational company from South Korea. This range has only a single oven. But even a single oven range may fit your requirement. Moreover it is easy on pocket too! What I like about this product is that despite coming with a single oven, it has a large capacity of 5.4 cu. ft., which allows to cook more dishes at the same time. It is fine for broiling steaks or roasting Turkey or Chicken as well as for baking cakes and is good for simmering too. Also I liked that it comes with 2 racks and 7 rack positions in its oven which provides lot of flexibility to cook different dishes. It comes with a griddle that fits perfectly on the center oval-shaped burner which heats quickly and provides consistent temperature.

That said, other aspects of this product which I liked are:

  • It comes with centralized smooth-touch oven controls which are easy to operate.
  • Its brings water and  other liquids to a boil quickly with its powerful Superboil™ 17,000 BTU Burner.
  • It has oven door lock feature, which is quite important as a safety concern for small children in your home from messing around with the oven.

But again, it has some downsides too. For instance, the knobs on the stove have polished look of stainless steel but in reality they are made of plastic, which may crack on frequent use. You may also feel frustrated while trying to cook with regular pan or pot on the large super burner. You would need large size wok or pan (at least 14”) to do the task on this burner. You may also face an issue of burners losing flame on regular low release gas, so you should be alert about checking flames on that setting.

Criteria To Select The Best Gas Range

I have shared the details regarding criteria to be considered while making a decision to purchase while comparing 36 Inch Gas Ranges as shared on the Home Page. The synopsis is that, as per my research, the 4 most important aspects to consider are Price, Weight & Dimensions, Capacity and Customer Satisfaction. Based upon this I will share my conclusion in the next paragraph.

Looking at various aspects, my personal vote goes to GE Cafe CGS990SETSS! It has much higher number of pros with very few cons compared to LG LRG3095. It is the most trusted product out there as can be seen in its 4 star rating from as many as 38 customer reviews! Which is huge compared to 3 star rating from just 11 customers in the case of LG LRG3095. But you may go with LG in case you are price conscious. But overall, there is no doubt that GE’s range has edge over LG’s. So the ball is in your court. All the best! :)

6 Simple Steps to Neatly Clean The Gas Range

It is highly important to clean the Gas Range on a regular basis. Generally food spills, especially liquid spills can be a real mess. Although these days many Gas Ranges come up with automatic cleaning functionality still I am laying down following steps in case your range does not have self cleaning functionality or you want the satisfaction of cleaning with your own hands. Anyway here are the steps:

  1. Weiman Gas Range Cleaning PadAllow your gas stove to fully cool down before you start cleaning it. This is to ensure that you don’t get your hands burned up while removing the griddles or grates.
  2. Fill up your wash basin or sink with hot water. Mix 2-3 spoonfuls of liquid detergent in the sink water.
  3. Remove the burners (if removable), grates, griddles from the gas range. Soak them in the hot water for around 15 minutes. This will loosen the dirt or other burnt food stuff.
  4. Remove the knobs and wash them in the hot water in the sink but don’t soak them for long as that may remove the markings over them.
  5. Meanwhile scrape dried spillovers from the surface of the range with a spatula or plastic knife. Don’t use metal scrapers as they may leave scratches on your range top. Wipe the scraped spillover from the top with a cloth moistened with hot water.
  6. Now coming back to sink, wipe the burners and grates clean with a professional gas range pad. Wipe them dry after rinsing with clean water.

How To Choose The Right Ventilation Hood For Your Gas Range

FIREBIRD Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood, 36-Inch, Carbon Filters Included

FIREBIRD Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood

Kitchen Ventilation forms a very important purpose if you are using a gas range or are planning one. The main purpose of ventilation is to reduce heat and condensation as well as cooking smells by extracting them outside. So in case you do a lot of greasy cooking with smoke on your range then you need to have proper ventilation in place.

Choosing the Ventilation Hood

There are mainly 6 types of range hoods:

  1. Under Cabinet Hoods  As the name suggests, these hoods are mounted under your kitchen cabinet right above your gas range. Such hoods can be ducted or non-ducted and can range from economy to high-end models.
  2. Pro Hoods – They are slightly larger than but look much similar to under cabinet hoods. Do you cook a lot? And do you prefer the looks of a bigger hood? Then pro hoods are for you! They also can be ducted or non-ducted.
  3. Wall Hoods – These hoods are also known as chimney hoods. They are mounted on the wall above your gas range. There is no need of cabinet with this kind of hood. In case you have a cabinet above your range, you will have to remove it. Wall hoods look good from the style point of view. They also can be ducted or non-ducted.
  4. Ceiling Hoods – They are also known as island hoods. As the name suggests, they hang from the roof above your range. If you have your gas range in Island kitchen layout, then these hoods are suitable to you. But be aware that if your hood is quite higher than the range, then go for larger and powerful hood with more CFM (cubic feet per minute) than the regular one.
  5. Downdraft Hoods – These hoods can be used in Kitchen with Island or Peninsula layout. As the name suggests, the air is pulled downwards in the basement or under the floor and then pushed out. If you don’t like your hood hanging from the ceiling and don’t want to block the view in your Island layout, then go for Downdraft hood as these hoods pop out only when in use. But again, they are less efficient than other hoods as they have to work against the natural movement of air, which is upward.
  6. Power Packs or Liners or Inserts – If you are looking for a custom made range hood, then go for Power packs. They are also known as Power Liners or Power Inserts. As per your taste, you may get them fit in plaster, metal or wood or any other material.

Bonus Tip – Some people think it necessary to install a wall ventilation fan in the kitchen along with the hood. It is totally unnecessary as wall fan is of no use in clearing fumes from over the gas range. And in case you already have a wall fan, then switch it off while using your range hood otherwise it may interfere in its performance.

Choosing the Power of your Range Hood

The power of range hoods is measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute), i.e. the quantity of air being sucked in per minute. Installing a range hood with higher CFM is always a plus as it removes all the bad smells and odors quickly. The rule of thumb however is to divide total BTUs (british thermal units) of your gas range by 100. For instance, if the total BTUs of your range are 45,000; then go for range hood with at least 450 CFM.

Choosing the Filter for your Range Hood

There are mainly 2 types of filters. If you are going for a ducted hood, then choose aluminum filter. And if you are going for a non-duct hood then choose charcoal filter. Aluminum filters are washable in your dishwasher and have to be washed every month to remove the trapped grease. On the other hand, charcoal filters are not washable, but have to replaced by a new one after few months of use. Some hoods have indicator lights to alert when to change the charcoal filter.

Deciding upon the Sound Level of Range Hood

The sound of range hoods is measures in ‘sones’. 1 sone is equal to 40 decibels, while 2 sones are equal to 50 decibels, and 3 sones are equal to 56 decibels while 4 sones are equal to 60 decibels and so on. Please note that higher the CFM, higher will be the sone rating. So look for a balance between right CFM and sound level as per your need.

Other aspects of Range Hoods which you may consider

  1. Speed Control – Some hoods have speed control functionality, which allows you to control the hood fan infinitely, just like dimmer switch.
  2. Lighting – Lighting is included in almost all the hoods with indicators like halogen, fluorescent, incandescent or light emitting diodes.
  3. Heat Sensor – Some hoods have heat sensor which automatically adjusts the blower to
  4. Automatic Shutoff – As the name suggests, this functionality shuts the fan off after a designated time.

I am sure, this guide will help you to choose the right ventilation hood for your Gas Range. All the best! :)

5 Important Features Of Gas Ranges You Should Be Aware Of

Gas Range CooktopAll the Gas Ranges come with certain features. Some of the features are standard and present in all while some are exclusive features which change from brand to brand. Here are 5 important features of Gas Ranges which you should know about:

1. Burner Types  There are mainly 4 types of burners in Gas Ranges:

  • High-Power Burners: Generally Gas Ranges have 1 or 2 high power burners with heating capacity of at least 15,000 BTU.  These burners are effective for searing and quick frying and boiling.
  • Low-Power Burners: They are also known as Simmer burners as they are used to prepare simmering foods and delicate food like sauces, chocolates and candies, etc.
  • Wok Burners: For much higher heat requirement, some Gas Ranges provide Wok burners which generate heat upwards of 30,000 BTUs.
  • Sealed Burners: Sealed burners prevent food from falling below the stove’s surface, which makes cleaning much easier.

2.  Griddles – A Griddle is a large flat cooking surface for use on the cooktop. It can be a standalone unit which can be fitted over one or two burners, or may have its own built-in burner.

3. Broilers – The broiler on your Gas Range may be located in a separate compartment below the oven, in the oven itself or at eye-level. Some customers consider broilers inside the oven or at the eye-level to be easy to use than broiler below the oven, simply because latter requires you to bend each time!

4. Oven Capacity –  If you have to cook for 1 to 2 people , then go for Gas Range with oven capacity of 2 to 3 cu. ft. On the other hand if you have to cook for 3 to 4 people, then go for Gas Range with oven capacity of 3 to 4 cu. ft. And if there are more than 4 people to be cooked for, then go for Gas Range with oven capacity of more than 4 cu. ft.

5. Grates – Burners grates are made from different materials like Brass, Steel, Cast Iron or Porcelain coated Cast Iron. Grated made from Porcelain coated Cast Iron are quite convenient to clean in the dishwasher.

So, I am hopeful that this article must have helped you to get familiar with main features of a Gas Range. All the best with your Gas Range purchase!

8 Advantages of Gas ranges (Dual Fuel) over Electric ranges

Gas Ranges and Electric ranges have their own Pros and Cons but when it comes to Gas Ranges, there are certain advantages which cannot be ignored. Here are 8 advantages of Gas ranges (Duel Fuel) over Electric ranges which are worth consideration:

Image of Gas Range

  1. Even Heat – Gas ranges generate better and even stove top heat for cooking. The heat from the gas flame heats the bottom as well as sides of utensils, which cooks much faster compared to Electric ranges.
  2. Better Control – Gas ranges are easy to gauge and level of heat can be precisely adjusted by altering the flame. Thus they offer better control over Electric ranges.
  3. Economical to Operate – Since Natural Gas as a fuel is much cheaper and easily available across the states as well as it creates no pollution, so Gas ranges are much economical to operate overall compared to Electric ranges.
  4. Better Efficiency – Gas ranges are more efficient than their Electric counterparts. In fact they will cook 2 meals for the same amount of energy with which Electric ranges just 1 meal!
  5. Economical to Purchase – Natural gas ranges are comparatively more economical and inexpensive than Electric ranges. And they are better value for money.
  6. Flexibility – As soon as you turn off the flame, the range no longer emits heat, so your food will not get overcooked even when you leave it on the stove to rest without continuing to cook.
  7. Fuel Advantage – So there is a short cut, or some other problem due to which there is no electricity. No problem! You don’t have any dependency upon it anyway!
  8. Dual Fuel Edge – Most of the gas ranges come up with electric oven these days. Additional option of electricity for the ovens as a huge advantage!

So looking at the above advantages, investing in a Gas Range (Dual Fuel) would be a much wiser decision to take. All the best!
